The Volunteer Advantage

One of my favorite books to read to my children is The Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle because it teaches the importance - and advantage - of helping others. The Little Blue Truck and his animal friends are always helping each other, so when they meet a truck without friends who is a bit stressed, they help push him out of the mud when he gets stuck. The lonely truck eventually realizes “a lot depends on a helping hand from a few good friends.”

This is also true when it comes to volunteering in Fredon. You get to meet people in person. You find friends with common interests. You accomplish goals together as a team. Then, you begin to find yourself invested in a community you care about full of people willing to help when you need it too!

I’ve talked to some residents recently who want to be more involved, so I tried to find some organizations that I thought could use support and volunteers. I‘m also including a list of areas I think could have more focus on them too.

A lot really does depend on a helping hand, so I hope you’ll consider volunteering or finding ways to say thank you to our current volunteers who keep Fredon going!

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Ideas for More Opportunities to be Neighborly

  • Creating new fundraisers for the Fredon Volunteer Fire and EMS Company

  • Starting a fundraising arm for the Fredon Recreation Department

  • Planning activities for senior citizens at the Fredon Civic Center

  • Coordinating social walks or bike rides to meet neighbors at Lodestar Park, Whittingham, or the Paulinskill rail trails

  • Organizing an informal Chamber of Commerce that meets in person to help each other’s businesses. In addition to the owners of our favorite local establishments, Fredon has many entreprenuers working from home to network with too!

  • Weeding playgrounds while your kids or grandkids play

  • Checking on neighbors who live alone during storms and power outages.

If you have an organization based in Fredon, one that serves Fredon residents, or an idea to add to the list, I would love to know. Please send me a note at Laura@LauraLovesFredon.com and I can update the post!
