How To Run For Fredon Township Committee

Now that I have been through the process, I wanted to share the steps and tips if you would like to run for Fredon Township Committee too!

1. If you haven’t already, register to vote using this website.

Registered voters who have lived in their district for a full year can file to run for municipal office and be on the ballot.

2. If you have been registered in Fredon for a year, then choose a party or run as an Independent. In order to switch your party affiliation, fill out this form.

3. Call the Sussex County Clerk’s office at 973-579-0900 and ask questions on the timing of when to file for the next election and what seats will be open.

4. The office will either direct you to the Fredon Township Clerk’s office or provide you with a few forms and a petition with a certain amount of signatures of registered voters you will need to get in order to run.

  • If you run as an Independent, you have until Primary Day in June to file with the County Clerk’s Office to make it on the ballot for the General Election.

  • If you run as a Republican or Democrat, you will have to file earlier (about 64 days before the June Primary) with Fredon’s Clerk to make it on the June Primary ballot first. If you win your party’s nomination, you will move on to the General Election in November.

If you have any questions, please reach out! You can email me questions and if I don’t know the answer, I do know that all of our local clerks are so helpful and knowledgeable and I can give you tips and help point you to the right place to find the information. Please remember that I started the process in mid-April and was able to get through these steps by mid-May with three children fighting over mommy and the iPad, so you can definitely do it too!
